Intelligent Setup Sequencing-Reducing the cost of Changeovers - Seminar
Increase throughput and reduce waste by logical sequencing of work.
Most production equipment has a preferred changeover sequence
which, when followed, minimises lost time due to changes.
(And improves quality also)
A good example is painting. If you change colour, you have to
'wash down' the guns and other equipment. The time taken
in wash down is most when you go from black to white. One
tiny bit of black left in the system might cause a defect.
If you go from white to grey and then to black, the total
time lost can be much less.
People in manufacturing know the best sequences for their
plant, but the problem in many companies
is to get people outside the manufacturing group
to recognise the impact of non-manufacturing policies
on changeover sequences.
Sales people can quote unrealistic lead times.
Finance people can set unrealistic inventory goals.
‘Fad of the month’ consultants give advice based on
irrelevant overseas circumstances.
The problems are expected to be resolved at various levels.
At each level meetings involve trade-offs with the various parties.
The senior people are often distracted with current problems
and might ignore the cascading impact of the imposed changes
on manufacturing.
Later, the manufacturing people catch it when performance
is reviewed.
Why is utilisation down?
Why are we working so much overtime?
The answer is a simple, visual presentation of
the impacts that even the most highly distracted
executive can understand.
At this seminar we discuss how to analyse setups
and how to present the setup sequences so that
the impact of decisions is clearly visible.
We will show how to use Excel or Lotus to help the
analysis, and how to fit it in with your current systems.
At the end of the course you will get a copy of the course notes and
a working model spreadsheet with the macros and scripts used in the course.
